Preparing The Grove
The Grove is set up as follows:
1. Altar with white altar cloth in center of Grove
2. Incense and incense burner at east of altar
3. Oil lamp or candle at south of altar
4. Cauldron half-filled with water at west of altar
5. Platter of earth at north of altar
A chair for the Druid is placed in the North.
Opening The Grove
(Druid enters the Grove through the gate appropriate to his/her degree, goes to north side of altar facing south, then salutes the Spiritual Sun – symbolically at noon in the south – with upraised right hand.)
Let the Powers attend as I am about to open a Grove of Druids in this place. The first duty of Druids assembled in the Sacred Grove is to proclaim peace to the four quarters of the world, for without peace our work cannot proceed.
(Druid circles to the east, and raises right hand, palm outward, in salute.) I proclaim peace in the East.
(Druid proceeds to south, where the same process is repeated.) I proclaim peace in the South.
(Druid proceeds to west, where the same process is repeated.) I proclaim peace in the West.
(Druid proceeds to north, where the same process is repeated.) I proclaim peace in the North.
(Druid returns to altar.)
The four quarters are at peace and my work may proceed. Let this Grove and all within it be purified with Air. (Druid goes to the altar, lights the incense and travels once clockwise about the Grove purifying the Grove, returns the incense burner to the altar.)
Let this Grove and all within it be purified with Fire. (Druid lights the lamp and travels once clockwise about the Grove purifying the Grove, returns the lamp to the altar.)
Let this Grove and all within it be purified with Water. (Druid, picks up the cauldron of water and travels once clockwise about the Grove purifying the Grove, returns the cauldron to the altar.)
Let the Grove and all within it be purified with Earth. (Druid picks up the platter of Earth, walks clockwise one time about the Grove purifying the Grove with Earth, returns the platter to the altar.)
I invoke the blessing of the Mighty Ones with the words that have been the bond among all Druids:
Grant, O Holy Ones, thy protection
And in protection, strength
And in strength, understanding
And in understanding, knowledge
And in knowledge, the knowledge of justice
And in the knowledge of justice, the love of it
And in that love, the love of all existences
An in the love of all existences, the love of earth our mother, and all goodness.
Awen, Awen, Awen.
(Druid goes around to the East in a clockwise direction and performs the full Sphere of Protection ritual to invoke the elements to bless and protect the Grove. The Druid then takes a seat in the North, and proceeds with the work of the Grove.)
Closing The Grove
(Druid stands in north and faces south.)
Let the Powers attend as I am about to close a Grove of Druids in this place. Peace prevails in the four quarters and throughout the Grove. Let any power remaining from this working be returned to the Earth for its blessing. (This is done, as the Druid concentrates on channeling all remaining energy in the space down through the altar to the heart of the earth.)
I now invoke the Sword of Swords.
From the rising sun, three rays of light;
From the living earth, three stones of witness;
From the eye and mind and hand of wisdom,
Three rowan staves of all knowledge.
From the fire of the sun, the forge;
From the bones of the earth, the steel;
From the hand of the wise, the shaping:
From these, Excalibur.
By the Sword of Swords, I pledge my faithful service
To the living Earth our home and mother.
Awen, Awen, Awen.
(Druid then goes to the altar, salutes the Spiritual Sun in the south, and leaves by the Gate appropriate to his/her degree.)
